300 year old house
In Triglav National Park
Studor 9 is one of our favourite projects to date. This 300 year old farm house was purchased by our clients Nicki and Russ Tong as a holiday home in the beautiful village of Studor near to Lake Bohinj.
Our design brief was to achieve a two bedroomed home with a separate sleeping mezzanine and large open lounge diner onto a fully fitted farm-style kitchen. Each bedroom has an en-suite bathroom and are arranged on the ground floor. Upstairs is the original barn space, now lounge and kitchen, where we retained many of the structural timber features in the new design. A fitted out basement area acts as a utility and storage zone and I believe Russ has big future plans for an extensive wine-cellar.
The house is under Heritage protection and within the Triglav National Park, therefore all design and construction methods had to be approved by both these authorities. The first stage of the reconstruction was demolition and strip-out of damaged elements and areas to be reconstructed under the new design arrangement.
The original farm house had a traditional ‘black kitchen’ ,which essentially, was an open fire without a chimney and smoke passed up through the roof rafters. After many years of this process the exposed roof structure became blackened and we undertook to manually sand and brush down the original roof timbers as they would form an integral part of the end product and give huge aesthetic value, plus retain the original feel and character of the building.
Many other elements of the original structure were retained and then sympathetically put back together, or reconstructed in original style. On completion we were able to hand-over a fully functional home to high specification with all modern comforts and utilities combined with the restored original features and characteristics of the original period farm house.
Client and contractor are equally delighted with the final outcome of this unique project and home.
